I found this on the InsertCredit forums
Feb. 17th, 2006 01:45 pmIt's about rom hacks. And, yes, I need to learn how to play around with html and reformat the old Choco entries for here, which I could probably get just by looking at the source of them. They're on CD now.
"Well, yes... There are three catagories of ROM hacks:
1) Infantile toilet humor. Text edits and sprite changes to things like sperm, Nazi symbols, blood, etc. Sprite edits are often only done for the first level or two, as after that point either the person's attention span or ability to play the game is exhausted.
2) Unskilled level re-design. The person either knows how to hack level designs, or found a tool by someone else. What he doesn't know how to do is create a decent level or a balanced game, so you get a sometimes unplayable mess.
3) Skilled level re-design, but too difficult. The person knows how to design at least a difficult but still theoretically playable level. Whether he can design a "fair" level remains questionable, because he invariably will always intentionally choose to make a difficult level. The general reason given is that the originals are too easy or that their games are meant for experts. These people will gravitate towards Super Mario Bros 1-3, Metroid, and Castlevania games.
Catagories 2 & 3 may rarely ASM hack new features. Remember that coding talent does not mean game design talent.
There is a fourth catagory of the "Skilled graphical or story edits," but it can be so rare that you might never see them. (People playing in that field often drift into level design.) "
You know what I hate about Livejournal? No quote tags. I'm not sure how I'll handle that. Maybe color?
1. Everything on iMockery. And.. oh, crap, this is the second genitalia reference I made in this journal. Hmph.
2. Strangely enough, I haven't played any of these, except for a hack of Mario 2 that involves jumping on a series of wiggly fish from a flowerpot that spews porcupines. I don't know if it's 1 or 2. And I can't remember what it is, anyway. I don't care. Screw it.
3. That hack of Mario that has a bunch of modified flagpoles that you have to jump across. If I ever find out who made it, I will find out where he lives and put rabid weasels in his pants. And several other roms I have.
4. Super Demo World, which was made to demonstrate an editor. I'd say Mario Adventure, except my emulator hates it.
I'm done with tests for a while. I got an 89% on a quantum test that was Tuesday, which I'm VERY surprised about, and then I overstudied for a Differential Equations test on Wednesday, and then I understudied for a Chemistry test. I think I did pretty good on that, but I would have done better if I didn't have 3 tests that week.
