42 days until the vernal equinox
Another horribly cold day. But it was 82° F in the reptile room.

It didn't feel very cold, at least, because there wasn't much wind and the sun did help a little. We had to get the goats out and feed them (which involved putting the blocks of hay on the snow instead of in that holder in the corner, and also involved forcing the door open because there was ice and snow blocking it, and breaking up the ice in their water bucket.

A guy who came to pick up his python said that goats sometimes headbutt when they're bored. Well, they're snowbound. They get a really tiny clearing to poop in because there's waist-high snow on the ground and there's nowhere to put it. I suppose you could throw it on the sides of the pen and maybe make a huge pile of it for the goats to climb on.
And I've heard 18 more inches from Saturday until Monday.

Migratory birds spread the flu. Which seems to me like something we should all know by now.
If you're wondering, and we probably all wonder, the H and N in the flu strain is the type of hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, the proteins the human body recognizes as antigens, the virus has on its surface.

We had a common murre. He died, alas. I'd describe them to you as "they kind of look like penguins, but they're auks and not penguins nor loons," but I can just show you one instead.

And we have a bufflehead duck. They look like this.

Male, of course. Females are less showy.

We're going to transfer a bat out to a facility on the Cape, where he'll exercise his flight muscles until it's warm enough to release him.

And we have the standard eastern gray squirrel, canada geese, mallard duck, catbird, maybe a rock dove or mourning dove.

Like I said, autumn and winter tend to bring more interesting animals with them, even if there are fewer of them and even fewer, if any, babies. I have no idea what activates estruation.

There was a zombie squirrel once that died on the x-ray table but was breathing for a while or something. I never saw this, Brody did.

I discovered Molly Crabapple in a post on Democratic Underground decrying a comment she made about how burning people is what pilots do when they bomb people.

I posted it on imgur just because while Tumblr is more than happy to let you plaster their images everywhere, and Facebook is happy as long as you accept the fact that the image URL could change at any time, some sites aren't. And I posted my reasoning behind doing that to scroll down the images as far as possible. I shouldn't have to do this because they are thin enough and if you're seeing the girl in the background, your window is too thin.

These are Emma's, if you haven't seen them already.

burning question: I remarked that someone who believes that vaccines are bad because even vaccinated people can act as carriers had a body temperature IQ in Celsius. Was I being too generous?
