It was 67° F today and vernal and I can't help but feel disappointed since the inevitable point when the temperature drops below freezing and stays there for a week will come any day now.

But meanwhile, in another part of the forest, we had a red-throated loon* who looked pretty fine and was even aggressive towards a towel (you have to wear goggles around loons because they'll go straight for the eyes) but needed some blood tests and a live food test with minnows before he could be released, a pissed-off swan that was probably taller than one of the interns who was wrapped in fishing wire but looked and acted pretty healthy but needed some blood tests** to make sure because there was blood in her feces, two juvenile swans***, a goose with a fractured humerus who was getting surgery when I wrote this down, and a woodcock who failed his flight test.

*and meanwhile in Wyoming, they're using nets to catch invasive fish but loons are getting caught in them. The best of intentions invite the worst kinds of trouble.
**Yes, lead poisoning does tend to result in lethargy. Stephanie, I believe, described it as the swans not reading up on the symptoms of lead poisoning, so I guess they're like Wile E. Coyote.
***Since I don't feel like updating now, especially something so superficial, swans start out chirping, then they move on to raspy chirping, then they just hiss.

I swear I remember this but part of me thinks I haven't, but somebody was putting on some kind of protective gown but he did it wrong.

And two of the box turtles had sex. I have no idea if they're fertile at their age, in fact, I have no idea how old those two were.

Someone, probably named Gina, drew this really awesome tree-branch-writing picture with animals hanging out on the word "Wildlife" and "center" written on a signpost.

And I didn't so much forget the camera as I assumed the camera was unnecessary. Check again in a week. As for the old drawings Christina did, look for an entry called "in another part of the forest," back in May.

As for the hedgehog, her uterus looked weird so she got a hysterectomy. Ask again in a month to find out what was wrong with her.

I was reminded that I could do a lot worse in my life; someone I had a crush on in high school is fanatically conservative, and that makes me cringe a little.
I was talking about that because apparently November 9th is a national holiday for the College Republicans, and I thought it was important. And also because she said something about communication or whatever and I said that we do just fine with patients who can't communicate at all, unless you consider angrily honking to be communication.

burning question: 37 days until Christmas. Who the fuck wants seven swans, anyway?
