86 days to go until the vernal equinox
Yes, I'm going to do this every day in winter. I know things won't be amazing on March 20th.

continuity
Sunday, I woke up and the room was spinning. Most people's experiences with the 24 hour stomach bug involve dread and then a sudden illness. I just woke up at 8 AM with it, kneeled at the porcelain deity, went back to bed and woke up at noon with a feeling of dread I couldn't shake.
I was expecting a quiet Monday, with the occasional tour, but got to watch some snapping turtle surgery instead. I also thought that Sarah was the name of a rodent, not its owner.
Also, with this, I do believe I have posted 100 entries in the year 2013. First I thought I would pull it off, then I thought I wasn't going to pull it off, then I thought I'd barely pull it off, then I pulled it off without resorting to Unnkulian deaths or Magic Window.

context
Snap-snap the Snapping Turtle had his head crushed by a car, a testament to the endurance of turtles that he survived. Either from his life in the wild or his current life in a kiddy pool, he has some sores on his scutes, which needed to be drilled out (there is a word for the device he used to do it and all the cheesy pus stuff and bits of dead bone needed to be removed until it was nice and white like coconut filling. Food comparisons are apparently a wildlife center tradition. Afterwards, he had the craters filled with white stuff and tegoderm, covered in duct tape.

tracking with closeups
A squirrel bit Caitlin on her neck and I told her she'd turn into a squirrel on the next full moon, and I didn't know what day that is, but now I do: it's January 15, 2014.

The French-speaking bird realizes Nina is there to serve him, so he's not mean.

the happening world
Human life in South Sudan has passed the point of no return. I know not yet whether it's a civil war or a genocide or both.

I heard about it from SudanRevolts, but this has been going on for a while, passing under the radars of those who aren't able to frame it as the Big Bad Muslims oppressing poor, innocent Christians. I don't really understand the pre-colonial, there's scant information on the major players, the Nuer and Dinka, while the Azande and the Shilluk seem to be neutral. As for colonial history, I know why the British drew the borders the way they did, I know why they built better infrastructure in the resource-poor north, I know why they exacerbated existing conflicts and created new ones.

I read something about Khartoum Sudan taking South Sudan back, and I really doubt that. I think if South Sudan made a land grab, it would be just the oil-producing regions.

Burning question: but if there's neither a reason nor purpose for the war, why can't you simply put an end to it?
