In 16th century Nuremberg, which, in modern times, is the Lille of Germany, there were guilds of amateur poets and singers who were mostly members of other guilds had a craftsmanlike approach and ornate rules for crafting songs, and they hold an annual concert on Midsummer's Day, which for some reason is June 23 and not August 5. Walther von Stolzing auditions for the their contest in order to win the hand of Eva Pogner, daughter of a goldsmith meistersinger, and Beckmesser, an attack on one of his critics, makes an ass out of himself and Walther wins the contest but turns down the award, but Sachs convinces him to accept it.
It's unique in that it's a historical opera and has no element of the supernatural or mythological. Eventually, it became a call to preserve German art from foreign aggression.
The actual opera is around 4 and a half hours, which really doesn't surprise me. It's the longest opera on Opera 101's list of running times, which means there's probably a six hour opera somewhere. Even the suite was frigging long, and by that, I mean, there are operas that are shorter than the suite, and by that, I mean, there's a Milhaud opera that's 8 minutes long. I gave my thoughts about Wagner last year.

The Rosenkavalier is Strauss attempting to write a Mozart opera and is set in 1740s Vienna, and features two extended waltz sequences. Octavian, played by a mezzo-soprano dressed as a man because by 1911, castrati had long fallen out of fashion, has an affair with the field marshal's wife, hereafter referred to as the Marschallin, while Baron Ochs is in love with Sophie, so the Marschallin suggests Octavian contact him and give her a perfumed silver rose. Octavian does so, falling in love with Sophie himself, and then comedic stuff happens and Octavian and Sophie end up together.
The waltz in the suite is quoted in the soundtrack of A.I, during their approach to Rouge City.

Gabriella showed up and left with Ashley's copy of Celestis. I'll let her know if Ashley ever changes her mind about wanting it. Also, I'll do something fanciful if she does, even if I don't know what that is. Radiance intrigues her as well. I'll leave Gold Fame Citrus and The Dervish House to collect dust another year. Let it be said that Brattle Books does not currently have Rainbow Man, A Mask For The General, or Rumors of Spring.
Someone behind me was talking about her friend who traveled aboard and found every city she stayed in boring by the time she left except for London.
I met a woman from Saudi Arabia with a Slowdive t-shirt, which is awesome. Here's my opinion on Saudi Arabia: if Trump passes more of his reforms, they're going to be laughing at our horrific dearth of GBLT and women's rights. Also, places unsuitable for human habitation are cool. Also, we need to steal their weather, which is clearly possible, as either Ireland or Seattle stole ours. Probably Seattle; they stole grunge from us as well.
A man had bluish hair, it was hard to tell exactly what shade of blue or pink it was due to the lighting on the train.
I met a pug named Darth Vader, who was super-soft and super-affectionate, and a Frenchie puppy, and a Bernese mountain dog and a shih tzu and a shiba inu.

burning question: how is gutting GBLT protections supposed to create jobs?
