reusable universes
Nov. 5th, 2017 06:21 pmSince I last visited the Worcester Art Museum, they acquired the entire collection of the Higgins Armory (how appropriate for a suit of Maximilian armor (full plate armor from Germany) and a shishak (an Ottoman cavalry helmet that later saw use in Russia)) along with their mascot (Leah the Fierce (As well as being a Hebrew word that could mean 'weary' or 'ungulate,' Lea is the feminine of Leo), a plush leopard, may or may not be around somewhere) Helmutt (on the 4th floor, there is a suit of armor for a hunting dog; on his page, he points out a giant ceremonial sword too heavy to be used in an actual fight and a head that looks like a ferocious animal), they acquired an Otto Dix painting called The Pregnant Woman, and I have noticed a wing of the museum used for education with some paintings by students that are pretty cool and some courtyard mosaics and samurai murals.
They now do armor demonstrations and I saw a guy walking around in black samurai armor.
One of the curators remarked that they really liked being able to put a suit of armor with other objects from its time.
There was a Diwali celebration in the courtyard, featuring Bollywood and traditional dancing (the first dance was done by a woman in violet and lime green clothing), singing and music played by an ensemble of tabla player, sitarist, violinist, and harmonium player. They had Indian food in the cafe which consisted of chana masala, chicken tikka masala, rice with bay leaves and cilantro, samosas and mint chutney/tamarind chutney/pickled onions, naan bread, and the Indian equivalent of a Munchkin with a sweet syrup on it. Unfortunately, they didn't have Maaza fruit drinks.
Priya might be the Indian equivalent of Emily but I know an Emily of Gujarati descent, which would make Emily the Indian equivalent of Emily. More accurately, Priya is the Indian equivalent of Amy.
A woman had purple hair in a braid.
This includes Pregnant Woman by Otto Dix and Raft by Hyman Bloom. So maybe don't click for art at work.

Breathing plastic bags and illuminated soda bottles, computer cooling fans that inflate tentacles and rosebuds, highlighter ink circulates through tubes, tupperware containers house the control boards, garage door sensors detect our movements.

There are a lot of videos of this.

I think that imgur and squarespace don't get along.

I told the docent that I can recognize some of the artists by their styles. Oh, look, there's a rotting corpse, so it must be Hyman Bloom. Oh, look, that's Alice Neel.
She had blue hair that had faded to a pale green blonde color and knobby knees and eyes limned with dark makeup. A woman with thick poofy hair called her beautiful.

Alice Neel - Julie and Aristotle

Nam June Paik (백남준) - Robert Goddard
I love this. It's a rocketship made from vintage TVs and radios and red neon flame exhaust.
There's a cast plaster slice of wedding cake.

Beatriz Milhazes - O Paradiso

Carrie Moyer - Rapa Nui Smash Up

Luise Nevelson

Yinka Shonibara - Deep Blue

Evergood - Rubber Raft

Vasily Kandinksy
Some of the paintings in the American portrait gallery had an extra plaque mentioning slaves owned or involvement in the slave trade.

There is a book for you to comment on the pregnant woman and other artworks.
Someone said "pregnant woman got me hard."
"Kandinsky would have loved Shi Jie Huang"
"The pregnant woman is reality for each of us had this symbiosis. Without it, there would be no each and no s."
"Renoir said that good painting is supposed to make you feel happy. This painting is creepy. It makes me feel uneasy."
I said in response that art is meant to reflect reality and sometimes reality makes you feel uneasy. Sometimes reality makes no sense or is ugly.
"It's how we view women. Are they mere receptacles for birth… or perhaps more?"
"reminds me of Berg's music. Stern, cold, direct, analytic, but with a touch of the wilting romantics."
Someone called her a nasty woman and there was a debate about it but, you know, I think Nasty Woman has become a compliment.
burning question: If the Civil War was really about states rights, why did the slave-owning states create the Fugitive Slave Act?
There were plans to annex Cuba and Nicaragua, along with less realistic plans to annex Mexico, the rest of Central America, parts of Colombia and Venezuela, and every island in the Caribbean, just so free states couldn't outnumber slave states.
