79 days until the vernal equinox

While I did gripe about this place last time I went, I really do like the museum, I just think its location is the biggest pain in the arse to get to and will be a pain in the arse until this reality gets so horrible with its polar vortices and frog right that we are all herded into an alternate one in which the Blue Line runs through Salem, or in which someone in Salem didn't realize that a few years ago, the PEM was not in fact bluffing and did schlep off to Boston in a huff.

What? I'd like to see a more likely situation in which the Blue Line will be extended to Salem before 2060.

In Lynn, there are signs in Khmer. Also, stop messing with the GPS, Ashley.

The museum is smaller than I remember. I'm not sure how big the expansion is going to be, nor do I know what's going in it. The food I had, some kind of vegetable soup and a cookie, was better too.

I overheard this: You're a dog, you're a dog. I'm a dawg. I could hear the w in his voice

One of the sculptures is probably not safe for work, even though it's hard to tell what's going on.

The tusk that Ashley thinks is the best thing in the museum was in a room with other objects and paintings from Guangzhou and Ningbo. You've already seen the tusk. A woman with glasses was in disbelief that there were so many objects from China in Salem.

So here's the bed.

Here's Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton. Fun fact: Canton, MA was named after Guangzhou and the horribly mistaken assumption that Guangzhou, Guangdong and Canton, MA are antipodes.

I wanted to post a recreation of La grande odalisque by a Chinese artist but can't find it.

Below were Chinese art with happiness symbols, including a vase depicting bats. There was a screen in which you could get a three dimensional view of various vases but it didn't seem to work.

mega megaplanet.

Kerry In Massachusetts
The woman with glasses had no idea who he's giving birth to. The website says it's Bush the Younger.

Vertical Vase 5
There's a better picture of this but the link doesn't go to it. It's Krystal Klear™ circles held together with yellow 3R dyed spacer bars.

A dress made out of seashells.

Intersphere
At least when I got an error on Imgur, it said that it's a URL error. So, yeah, nobody tell Mark Zuckerberg.

Interim - Hutson. Which is a common enough word and a common enough surname that Google is being of no help to me. Of course, their servers are powered by fragments of Ashley's soul. Maybe I spelled his name wrong. Maybe I wrote the wrong word.

Blue New Mexico Bowl
New Mexico Glass is made by melting metallic silver onto the molten surface of cobalt glass.

Erickson - Teapot in Hand

Russell Biles - Seven Deadly Sins
For those of us who have worked with geese, wrath riding a goose makes total sense. Cats may be passive aggressive and quick to turn on you but geese are aggressive aggressive and swans are massive aggressive. Also, you can see their anuses, or cloacas in the case of Lust and Wrath. There's an earlier Wrath in which he's riding some kind of wolf gorgonopsid dragon and the monkey is flipping off someone and holding a car's steering wheel.
Move over, tusk. I have a new favorite work here. This was installed in 2016.

Patel - Gateway
Depicts the vast gulf between hopes and reality, a gate built as a testament to British power that has transformed into a symbol of Mumbai's economic and cultural might.

Early Morning Local
If a site is insecure according to Firefox, it must be really fucking insecure.

Khakhar - First Day In New York

Singh - Munna Apa, Morning, and a Seated Man

The Bombay Buccaneer

Kumar - Unemployed Graduates
The standard way to post this picture is to get a link.
However 1. I don't trust links to not disappear and when someone comes here in 2021 wondering what they missed at the Peabody Essex Museum, they won't find a bunch of dead images and 2. I have no idea why TripAdvisor would ever want to claim this as their own. Especially when their mascot is some kind of horned owl and not some kind of blind cave fish or mole rat. It's not 1995 any more. There's one on Tumblr but someone turned the contrast up too high.

M.F. Husain - Varanasi
It's a really cool painting. Pity I can't find anything but a small detail on Instagram. He's been called the Picasso of India.

Bawa - Dharma and the God
One leg represents truth. Missing are austerity, cleanliness, and mercy.

Mehta - The Rickshaw Puller

Husain - Peasant Couple

There's a Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit, showing her clothing, photographs of her, and paintings by her. And I've realized I've been spelling her name wrong all this time. It has two Fs, unlike James O'Keefe.

woman with blue hat
There's another one, in which you can barely see her style.

Back in those days, Georgia O'Keefe liked to wear capes and muted beige silks.

There were some caricatures of artists in front of a statue of Coatlique.

Manhattan

Pelvis with the Moon.
What burns my ass is when Image Search hasn't caught up with the website and for reasons known only to the webmaster, the picture no longer exists. And it's a lot better than the blurry picture I found on Pinterest.
She was more interested in the spaces between the bones.

Ram's head and white hollyhock

Green Yellow and Orange.
She begins with the hues she sees in nature and intensifies them.
She started wearing blue in New Mexico and eventually started wearing Japanese and Chinese styled clothing.

Jack in the Pulpit.
She denied anything sexual in her art, and anything gendered.

XYZT is an exihibition of ten interactive environments.

Shifting Clouds is a "probabilistic social model of movement." I believe it's the one in which a cloud of lampyrines shifts itself and reforms based on the viewer's silhouette.

the grass lines shimmer in response to footsteps.

the letters can be pushed away by our shadows.

sometimes it is a grid that breaks apart into constellations.

the black is pushed away to reveal white when you touch the screen.

the tree is made from words.

blowing or snapping your fingers will cause the words to break apart and the letters to drift around and interact with the objects entombed within.

the fireflies coalesce into circles around our hands and fly away when we let go. Alternately, fireflies are repelled by our touch.

you'll just have to watch the video. In fact, most of them are videos. Look up XYZT on Instagram. VSCO is great but not really searchable.

All The Flowers Are For Me is a variation on a work called Intersections which was on display in 2016. They are both laser-cut steel boxes that weigh about 600 pounds in a room painted yellow (in this instance; elsewhere, the room was white. Agha knew it would be cold and polar vortexy and in Islamic architecture, there is a lot of gold) with a single light bulb inside, creating a sacred space where all races, genders, and religions but not necessary political ideologies can feel welcome.
The Peabody Essex Museum posed this so I will too. It also asks what women you admire, other than your mother. Responses include Maya Angelou, Malala Yousafzai, Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
burning question: why is the empowerment of women still such a contentious issue? Some of their responses are "girls are ingrained to behave and represent themselves in a delicate and reserved manner" and "anything that challenges what our society is based upon seems to give people the impression that the structure is crumbling" and "we're told that we need to be saved and that other women's success comes at our detriment"
