84 days until the vernal equinox

I was almost expecting this to be late because I was in Worcester (actually Holden, a name I remember because of Blade Runner, where the fire hydrants are ringed with green reflective lining that makes them look like flying saucers) for Christmas Eve, where I had antipasto and ceviche with various seafood and those green olives with pimentos.

The observant will notice that the screen shots have a low resolution for a Genesis game.

You might be thinking “Squirrel King? But Chip and Dale are chipmunks!” A chipmunk is a type of squirrel and they’re more deserving of the title king than the more familiar gray squirrels.

Chip & Dale are obviously chipmunks although for whatever reason, I thought they were gophers. I mean, it’s right there in the name. Chip. Munk. Also, a squirrel king is a collection of squirrels whose tails have tangled together, making them unable to separate themselves.

Chip gets a pimp hat now. You have two attacks: throwing boxes at enemies, lifted straight from the Rescue Rangers NES game, and fireballs.

This guy right here has two frames of animation.

No music? Okay. Slightly better than being treated to, I dunno, a Genesis version of Luke Bryan. Which would probably be better than the actual thing. At the very least, there wouldn't be lyrics.
Further research tells me there IS in fact a soundtrack to this game and it’s actually not bad, even if half of it was ripped from other games. I have no idea why it didn't work when I played it but whatever, I'm only here to gather screenshots.

Here’s an enemy disguised as a box. He’s also from Chip and Dale 2 for the NES. I'd imagine a lot of them are.

There are parts where the level scrolls vertically and you can scroll the ground off and die. The game is really generous with lives, though, even though it maxes out at 9. Those gems are collectable. I'm pretty sure they give you an extra life if you get 100.

This is way too hard for a stage 1 boss.

But there’s no point to hanging on to your fireballs/hulk hands because they reset to three after you beat the world. Your health also resets from level to level. So just spam hulk hands. You’re capped at nine of them so for some of the bosses, you do have to sit around and wait for a throwable object to appear.

The translation of level names is the typical awkward.

There’s a Super NES port of this game, merely called Squirrel, and it looks like it plays far worse. There are fewer levels and only one boss and only one music track. Don’t play it. If you’re going to play this, play the Genesis version.

There’s ratchet scrolling in this game. That’s weird, seeing how this is a Genesis game and they really should know better.

Like many games, you fall like you’re on the sun.

This boss just kind of bounces around. I checked the Chip and Dale games to see what they, ahem, borrowed for this game, and I found a familiar boss in there, but not from this game. You'll see. Soon enough, dear readers.

There's very little red in this ravine.

I was dreading the tiny platforms but it really wasn’t that bad. It’s rather sad that games with the official Nintendo Seal Of Quality, or whatever the Sega equivalent is, have so much worse platforming than this, but hey, all that seal means is that the cartridge won’t brick your console.

The ostrich’s head is not part of his damage field. He's ganked from Chip and Dale 2.

Jungle, forest, same thing.

Some players might recognize this as "Super Mario World" for the Genesis, not to be confused with the real deal. The first few stages look like Mario levels but the next one is just this level.

I didn't get his helicopter head topper in the screenshot. Anyway, you know how to deal with this.

Yoku turtles and janky platforming ahoy!

I think this guy's an original creation.
So if you hit this guy at the exact moment he changes platforms, he'll bug out and the game will become unwinnable.

The sign says "no entry" (禁止通行)

That's a creepy-looking tree.

Even Lumiere wants you dead. I mean, he did in Chip 'n' Dale 2 as well.

The mutant ducks are electrified here.

宝 means "treasure"

This guy disappears and reappears but you can use your Hulk Hands to stunlock him. He shoots rings at you.

This might be the best game I’ve played to come out of Taiwan but that’s not saying a whole lot.

Barnett must be the mastermind of the whole thing.

巴开重工 means "Pakistani Heavy Industry" at least according to Google Translate. It could just be "Bakai" though. I know I have Chinese readers. Don't be afraid to leave a comment.

不断学習 means "Keep Learning. Okay... I might be mistaken, Barnett's choice of font isn't the most readable.

我们的思想団结 - our mindset
我们的目标一至 - our goal is one to…
I had to go on to Wiktionary to figure this out.

糸 is part of one of the characters in 结. Typically when it’s used as the left component of a character, it’s written like 纟. And that's what I went with. Mandarin's the official language but they do speak a dialect of Hokkien (along with a dialect of Hakka and various indigenous languages, all of which are Austronesian and written in Latin) so I don't know if that's a Hokkien thing or if they're just being peculiar.

This is Barnett. You know what to do.
So, I have a confession to make. I never watched Rescue Rangers. I’ve seen The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under but those are completly different. So I don’t know if the elephant is a villain or if it’s just something the programmers pulled out of their ass. TVTropes has a list of villains. A crime lord of unspecified species. A cat with a mustache. A stoned cat. A mole. Some sort of basal anapsid. A gangster rat. A mad scientist.

Wait a minute.

This isn't right.

The names in the credits are off slightly. Thankfully, someone made a list of the enemy names.
Hardy: Box Enemy Matthew: Football Enemy Danell: Piranha Corey: Bat Eugene: Snake Dick: Monkey Bell: Hammer Mole Candle:.......😂What else would he be? Ghost:....Like I was saying above..😂 Bruno: Electric Duck Wang: Another Ball Enemy (Not sure what he’s holding 😅) Unnamed Sword Character Unnamed Bird Character

Vox Day covered a Muse song.
burning question: do people still listen to Muse? From what I’ve heard, they “peaked” with Black Holes and Revelations, and there's a sharp drop regarding The Resistance, The 2nd Law, Drones, and Simulation Theory. I've also seen people say Absolution was their best album and if that's true, I think I can just give up on any future plans to listen to Muse.
Origin of Symmetry is someone trying to rip off The Bends after OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac came out.
Also, if anyone in music is involved with cryptocurrency and/or the anti-vax movement, it's Matt Bellamy.
