82 days until the vernal equinox

Holy shitsnacks, that is some fast-moving text. And it goes to the next screen automatically. I was trying to take screenshots in the attract mode by just mashing the quick screenshot button and occasionally rewinding in the hopes that I can get everything, but as you can see, there are 24 screens of text. Eventually, I realized that this shows up when you hit start and actually stops to let you read it on your own.
The narrator in this game is the Mysterious Sage Barza from Power Rangers.

I'm not translating this.

There's a translated ROM out there, and once again, I learned this when I was way too deep into the game. The gist of it is that Dorothy lived with her uncle Henry and auntie Em on a farm in Kansas and then a tornado came and Dorothy realized that her dog Toto was missing so she went to look for him. She found him under a bed but the house was lifted up and flew away to Oz, where everything is beautiful. When she landed, she crushed the Wicked Witch of the East. She's wearing magical silver shoes instead of ruby slippers like in the books. The woman gives her a magic wand as well. Dorothy wants to go home. So woman tells her to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City. Then Dorothy finally asks the woman who she is and she says that she's the Witch of the North and that there will be hardships along the way, and then presumably disappears in a soap bubble. The translation says something about how she'll need four treasures to see the Wizard. I checked that one and it's accurate. Still, I have no idea what they're talking about. Maybe they're talking about the four types of stat increasing powerups. Yeah, they introduced a couple of RPG elements to this game. Pretty cool, huh?

There doesn't seem to be an Emerald City on this world map.

The sign is from a Mickey Mouse game but I'm not sure where the bamboo forest is ripped from.

Dorothy's magic wand allows her to throw swords. Also, if she has collected enough magic power, you get a special attack by pressing what I think is A and B at the same time.

You ride a skateboard in this game.

I don't remember Dorothy fighting vegetables on her way to Oz in the movie, but then again, the Wizard of Oz was a series of books before it was a movie.
Anyway, the cucumber is a recolored sausage from Panic Restaurant.

The ultimate irony of this, at least according to Alanis Morisette, I was planning on playing a game called Don Doko Don 2 but Nestopia said no and OpenEmu has a slightly different resolution that may be more accurate to a TV screen of the time. Reasons that offend only me. Anyway, I settled on this game instead. Hey, looks better than that SNES Wizard of Oz game at least, right?
The mushroom guys are ripped from that game.

When you're skateboarding, you jump on enemies instead.

There are also strawberry enemies with huge fangs but they jump from the keyhole windows and fall really fast.

We meet the Scarecrow almost immediately.

You only have one life.

Not falling off the cliffs gets you this scene with the Scarecrow, or Straw Man as he is called in Chinese. Scarecrow asks Dorothy to untie him and then he laments that his head was filled with straw and even the birds won't play with him. Dorothy tells him that maybe the Wizard will make him smart.

The Scarecrow's attack cuts in a circle around him. It has a short range but it's very powerful. Scarecrow can ride the skateboard too but only if Dorothy falls off a cliff or takes too much damage.

I was surprised because pressing command made me change characters but then I checked and apparently I accidentally remapped select to command.

The crabs are from Wonder Boy or Chip 'n Dale, apparently. Don't know what game the frogs are from.

The boss is a dragon... frog... thing that flies around and launches tadpoles at you. I found a playthrough of this game on Youtube in which various people in the audience point out which assets are stolen from which game but they're really too bewildered by the perspective on this lake to notice. Maybe Chip 'n Dale. The guy's pronunciation of Waixing bothers me.

The alligators are from something called Tail Gator.
Here, sometimes, swords fly out of the water.

A lot of the sounds come from Contra.

Here we meet the Tin Woodsman, who now lives in a leaf hut.

Rain rusted his body while he was on the way to the blacksmith. Dorothy oils him and he's grateful that he can finally move. He says that Dorothy's heart is good but he doesn't have a heart. Dorothy tells him that maybe the wizard will give him a heart.

It's those frigging monkeys from the Lion King game.

Fortunately, the Tin Woodsman can throw axes in multiple directions a la the Metal Blade.

And he can actually jump, unlike his counterpart in the licensed SNES game.

It's nice to see some jank that benefits you, the player. These platforms are moving but if you enter even their vicinity, you'll end up on top.

Tin Woodsman's sprite is from Little Samson, which was made by the same people who made Cocoron, which means I should play it.

Those leaping guys are annoying.

This guy throws various projectiles at you.

This guy looks familiar and it's bothering me that I have no idea what game he's ripped from.

The lion roars at Dorothy and then admits that he pretends to be brave so she offers to take him to the wizard.

You can ride this guy.

I think the weasels are from the Roger Rabbit game. The level architecture is taken from Cool Spot.

The spikes don't actually hurt you here.

This boss is easier than he looks.

Bomb-throwing Disney weasels.

The weasels here are armed with futuristic laser guns.

Hey, it's another one of those sausages.

Ah, this boss. Probably one of the more frustrating bosses, mostly because the bubbles come up without any warning and he rains down attacks on you without any warning either.

The Lion is clearly using Simba's sprite from the Lion King.

He jumps really high and can pounce on enemies.

Shit, I put myself into a bad situation with the Tin Man and I have no idea if he comes back after you beat a level or whatever.

He doesn’t. The one bit of bullshit they actually took from the licensed Wizard of Oz SNES game. I really don’t want to play through the entire game over again, especially the boss of the ice world.

This boss is easy, at least.

I'd say we're entering a zone of danger.

This game has no sprite memory at all which is fine because it has ratchet scrolling. This actually works in your favor. You don’t have these guys from Rockin’ Kats shooting two arrows at a time at you from offscreen.
Also, I just came off of Saiyuuki World and that game had constantly respawning enemies for whatever reason.

Oh, those are flying monkeys.

The skulls have tongues that damage you.

These guys are also from Rockin' Kats and the missiles they throw home in on you. The best way to deal with them is to slowly move forwards and launch projectiles.

What the hell is this? Why am I in New York City all of a sudden?

I guess the Witch's Castle is here.

There's a guy made of water here.

The water here is luminescent.

We've reached the Wicked Witch.

The witch tells Dorothy to give her those silver shoes or else. Dorothy says no, so the witch calls her a rude smelly girl. Dorothy tells her that she needs to be taught a lesson.
In the translated rom, the writing is removed from the banner. I can't make out the last character anyway. The first one might be start. The second one is rock, or perhaps mountain peak or cliff.

Remember when I said I recognize a boss from Chip ’n Dale 2? That’s the boss.

The Witch’s weak point is the tongue. At least, that’s what I think is happening. The hitbox is there whether her tongue is sticking out or not, so it just comes off as weird hit detection.

Her power is taking away your pause ability. It’s like they knew you’d need save states because holy shitsnacks. If for whatever reason, you only have the lion, just unplug your Famiclone right now, because the fight just went from figuratively impossible to literally impossible.

Oh, and you can die in the ending.

Hey, that's Willy from Rockin' Kats.

Dorothy and friends use wisdom, courage, and power... I mean love... to help each other and reach the Emerald City, where the lion gets fruit juice, the Scarecrow gets a bag of pins and sawdust, and the Tin Man gets a cloth heart. I mean, in the story, the heart is filled with sawdust and the bag is filled with bran and pins. Dorothy goes home in a balloon and goes back to Kansas where she lives happily ever after. The end.

burning question: Why is there an animated series based on the Bored Ape NFT?
