Jelly Boy 2
Jan. 3rd, 2022 06:54 pm75 days until the vernal equinox

This game has exactly two things in common with the previous post's game: Fuck and all.

The reason this game wasn't released is because Sony and Nintendo had a massive falling out over the SNES CD-ROM. Nintendo instead partnered with Philips, and so became the CD-i and some infamous voice acting sequences. Why they didn't release this for the Playstation, I can not say. You know, since every other third party series on the SNES moved to the Playstation.

The music in this game is really good.

A game where I can customize the controls!

One day at Jellyland...

The circles in the background change size and the characters flicker when turning into their jelly counterparts.

You have to do the intro world (an entire world) first but then you get access to four other worlds.

Marine is the main character. His power is flinging balls.

Those look suspiciously like the starman from Mario.

Collecting 100 jellybeans gives you an extra life.

We get a rollercoaster ride level early on.

The Pied Piper just kind of jumps around and summons a bunch of mice that go away when you hit him. Pretty basic first boss.

This guy floats around and stretches his hands out to grab you.

After beating him, a balloon appears and out pops Mint. Mint, while an odd name, is not unprecedented in the world of video games. See: Tales of Phantasia. Threads of Fate. Haven't played that one yet. Wikipedia tells me that the other character's name is Rue. It's a biblical reference to plants of little value.

This is great because Mint is fast and can throw her hair decoration like a boomerang. No, I don't know why the star is currently on Marine. Maybe it's demoing how you can throw it.

It doesn't really matter what order you play the stages in.

Can you find Mint?

The dinosaurs all wear Yoshi eggs.

You can crack the eggs in the nest if you want. I didn't because I didn't know about it.

The monkeys are kind of janky.

The idols roll towards you if you come close.

Just run away when the dinosaur chases you.

And hit his face with your boomerang or with Marine's balls, phrasing.

Maybe this is why it wasn't redone for any other system.

You just ate a Yoshi embryo!

Yolk, or York, can do a dash. The names both make equal sense. Yolk makes sense because he not only came from an egg, he loves to eat. York is more likely to be an actual, if unusual, name.

This is Ninja Western Land.

The bandits shoot at you.

This level is an autoscroller.

Just hit the bandits when they come out of the barrels.

And now, the ninja part of Ninja Western Land. The feudal era of Japan ended in 1868, right around the time the Wild West began.

That sign says "Ninja Village"

The boss arena is styled like a kabuki theatre.

In his first form, he'll make copies of himself and the real one throws shuriken at you.

The toad rider is related to 19th century folk tales. They show up in Yamato Man’s stage as well.

Behind the screen is Carm. I'm not sure if her name is supposed to be short for caramel.

In the finished version, Carm would move faster underwater by spinning her ribbon like a propellor, but this wasn't implemented yet for some reason. Which is weird, because the game is like 98% complete.

For the first slate in Jelly Land, I think there's a way to get it with Marine, but because the manual doesn't exist and the nonexistent manual would most likely be in Japanese, I didn't know.

Let's head to Wonder Space.

The hedgehogs indicate where retracting spikes are.

I'm not sure who that guy is.

This is what the stereotypical alien in Japanese culture looks like. Amorphous body with tentacle legs. They're inspired by the Martians from War of the Worlds.

Cygnus is a summer (United States and Japan) constellation while Cancer and Gemini are winter.

Hey, there's someone down there. I'm not sure who she's supposed to be or how you're supposed to get there. Or why there are two Geminis in the sky. 'Cause they're twins. I dunno.

The flying saucer summons smaller electrified UFOS and when you hit it, it pops open to reveal Japanese Martians.

The rooms with the sun are well-lit.

The rooms with the moon only reveal their walls for a brief moment.

The slate piece is in this maze. You have to bring Carm because her other ability is being able to pass through thin floors.

This guy just launches stars at you. Then he does some Mode 7 stuff.

A rocket crash lands and Sienna the dog is inside. In Japanese, this is written as "uwan, wanwanwanwan, kun"

Sienna can float with her tail. Some translations call her Schenna. Schenna is an entirely unrelated city in northern Italy. Sienna, which is a pigment containing iron oxide and manganese oxide, is also not to be confuse with sepia, which is the ink of a cuttlefish.

Welcome to Crazy Ocean.

Arr, mateys!

This is the most annoying boss in the game. The hard part is figuring out exactly how much time it takes for the cannonball to get over there, and of course, you’re dodging his projectiles as well. The third ship moves faster than the other two, and the hitboxes are really really picky.

This piece of the slate is not at all well-hidden.

Rodents are typically decent swimmers.

Don't tell me what to do, game.

But it turns out the pirates just found a bunch of mimics.

This image was giving me massive "invalid markup" grief because it apparently had one type of quotation mark at the beginning and another type at the end. Like quotation marks are even necessary with images.

The fish boss is pathetically easy.
Ed pops out of a treasure chest.

Ed can place bombs which then explode, damaging certain walls.

Nice detail with his glasses.

I thought you needed Ed to break some blocks but no, it turns out you need Sienna's tail float. Sienna’s tail float is counterintuitive. You have to use the action button instead of mashing the jump button like you’d expect.
In Chinese, 忍 means "endure" or "forbear." In Japanese, it became "patience" or "stamina"

After rescuing all the characters, two new areas appear. You can do them in either order.

I think that's supposed to be the planetarium but this area is on the west side of that big castle and the planetarium is on the east. But I don't think Jelly Land is that big.

It looks like the final boss of Sonic 2 but it's nowhere as difficult.

Choo choo!

When you die, an angel appears and rises off the screen.

Standing on the side platforms helps.

Your target is the mad scientist, not his robot.

It would seem that the gimmick of Gimmick Woods is a maze.

It would seem I was wrong. Each Gimmick Woods stage is different.

I don't know if there's a way to change characters mid-stage, though I don't think I've ever tried select and right now, it's way too late.

This boss is pretty tough without a ranged attacker. Hold on. Sienna or Yolk are good at getting hidden heart pieces and slate pieces, while Mint is the best at getting through levels and fighting bosses.

Hit the face. Avoid the eyes and the hands.

This level puts you on a plane.

Eventually it crashes.

The horses go up and down and the level autoscrolls.

This boss is pretty fun.

When lightning appears, stand on the opposite-colored blocks.

Eventually, he'll lose his horse and just try to pogo jump on you.

At last, you can reach the Jester's Castle.

Let this be a lesson. Always preview first if you're including a large number of images.

These guys are just like Magikoopa.

Looks like a game of Simon.

This guy splits into smaller pieces.

All but one of the pieces. I wonder where the last one could be.

That platform bounces up and down.

For a final boss, he's suspiciously easy.

I knew I took this screenshot and didn't delete it.

If you beat the jester without eight pieces of the board, you get the bad ending, where you don't get restored to your original form.
The shadow isn't an attack, it's just his death animation.

They're all like "we did it!" "but we're still slimes!" and Mint points out that slate to you. Yolk just wants food. Sienna says "woof, woof!"
Nonetheless, they all walk away satisfied because they've defeated evil.

This boss is a test of patience.

Don't just hit his head or flames will appear. You need to get on one of those rising platforms. Or just know where the flames will be.

A final form? I’ve never seen that before.

Hit the green orb quickly and dodge the waves of fire that come from the side.

All back to normal.

Sienna agrees about getting food. She must be part pug.

Sienna just changed size.
burning question: Anyway, it's now 2022. Nello is still in business, although I hear they're talking about moving. How is Nello still in business? You can get better food in New York City from Pizza Rat.
