yamamanama: (death)

Guy on the train said that he really liked Philip K. Dick’s books because I was reading The Simulacra.

There were marshmallow peeps taped to the knees on the statues in the Brewer Fountain. I got a sausage, peppers, and onions sub nearby.
Two Canada geese were brazenly standing on the bridge across the pond, which had been drained for cleaning, I guess.

A woman in a shirt with bright citrus-colored stripes had a mastiff named Easy and I was like “is that his name or are you telling him not to run up and smother me to death with sloppy kisses?” Easy stood on my foot to keep me from walking away.
I met a few other dogs too. One was black and white and purple ribbons in his fur and he liked to chase squirrels.

Zoltán Kodály - Sonatina for cello and piano
He wrote this one early in his life, while listening to Debussy and you can definitely tell.

Jeremy Gill - Winternacht for flute, viola, and harp
a world premiere. The composer got up on stage to talk about his work and while the Chameleon Arts Ensemble provided a text in their booklet, he said that if you try to follow along to the text, you’ll just get lost, but you can hear the fall of snow and the trudging of booted feet and the howling of wind and even a sunrise but it’s not as awe-inspiring as Ravel’s sunrise from Daphnis et Chloé and I had a thought about setting winter to music when it’s the season of silence.
He said that it was inspired by Debussy’s use of the same instrumentation but one of his earlier préludes, Des pas sur la niege.
The musician’s clothing evoked winter nights as well.

Philippe Hersant - Im fremden Land for clarinet, string quartet, and piano
The title translates to In A Foreign Land. He’s a French composer born in Italy but the work and its movements have German names.
Weigenlied / Berceuse / Lullaby - From the sound of this, “lullaby” was not what I’d expect.
Totentanz / Danse macabre - Dies Irae on the piano and some deranged strings.
Andenken / en souvenir de… - Much like Mahler, introduces klezmer sounds.
Phantasiestück / fantasy - swirling piano and clarinet
Choral - the shrill blast of a clarinet cutting through a piano funerary march and solemn strings.

Heitor Villa-Lobos - Quintette en form de chôros
When in Paris, Villa-Lobos wrote several Chôros for various instrument combinations, all inspired by spirited street music of Rio de Janeiro called chorões. This one was for woodwind quartet and French horn, though it was originally written for English horn. It evokes the beating of drums and stamping of feet and howling of jungle birds.

Felix Mendelssohn - String Quinet no.2 in B-flat major
This was composed very late in his life. The allegro vivace is exuberant, the andante scherzando is a stately dance, the adagio e lento is expressive and lyrical, and the allegro molto vivace is a return to energy.
A regular concertgoer said that it was defintely recognizable as Mendelssohn, and one of the things that sticks out is how they’ll play both unfamiliar things by unfamiliar composers and unfamiliar things by familiar composers.
Someone's dog got loose and was in the drained pond chasing after geese.

The rain held off until after I got on the train.

burning question: how did Donda even get a nomination for Album of the Year?

It sounds like you've had an interesting day, full of interesting characters, both canine and human. Where do you go for these concerts? I can't answer your question, as I've never heard of Donda, though I have heard of several of the composers you mentioned.

i feel like kanye albums get all the hype in the world and that there's nothing you can do to stop it. i'm happy that you got to see some dogs! sounds really fun. i see pple's pets on twitter and just want to pet or hold them so badly. while i'm out, if i see a dog i don't really do or say anything but internally i am very happy.
