yamamanamaI tried the five-spiced fish (tilapia) sandwich from Suasday which the website doesn’t mention for whatever reason. Same thing as everything else though: seasoned carrots, green papayas, cucumbers, cilantro, jalapeños. I’m not sure what those five spices are but I found one page saying it’s fennel, fenugreek, brown and yellow mustard, cumin, and nigella seeds and one page saying that five spice paste contains lemongrass, garlic, turmeric, lime leaves, and galangal. The second is more understandable.
I met a Pembroke corgi and a dalmatian along the way.
Candide, Pines of Rome, and Romanian Rhapsody are pretty well-known. I’ve never heard of William Dawson’s folk symphony. This is the Boston premiere, apparently. It’s based entirely on spirituals and other black folk songs. It premiered in 1934 to rapturous applause and then just languished in obscurity. He made a trip to six West African countries in 1952-53 and changed things around, adding an adawura and African rhythms that he said had been lost in the long arduous journey to slavery.
There are three movements: The Bond of Africa, which begins with a quotation of Let My People Go and merges motifs in pentatonic and diatonic scales into a chromatic scale, and there are echoes of jazz and Dvorak and African dances and ends with a bang; Hope in the Night, slow, intense at times and lighthearted at others; O, Le’ Me Shine, Shine Like A Morning Star! which is wild and triumphant and ends with a drumbeat and a single chord.
Dawson was more well-known as a jazz tromboner and as a composer of choral music.
Gabriella has noticed an increase in homelessness.
I said that Russia went from “gonna take Kyiv by next week” to “Moon of Alabama suggests taking Odesa and linking up Novorossiya with Transnistria and sandwiching Ukraine between Russia, Novorossiya, and Belarus,” to “lucky if they can hold on to their gains”
I also think they want to hold on to the Donbass until they can get Trump back in the White House.
There was a problem with a previous red line train Gabriella was on. But our journey home went smoothly. Aside from the pieces of uneaten chicken wings on the floor, anyway.
